One of the vital things that a digital artist must learn is how to make a photographic composition to be used on Painter as the underlying template.  It must be understood that the though the importance of this preparation is clear to most digital artists, the pre-Photoshop groundwork is a crucial step as well.

There are numerous tools made available to digital artists now-a-days.  With software like Photoshop, which offers a wide variety of tools, many novice artists are inclined to utilize so many tools all at the same time.  The resulting image is not necessarily perfect.  Instead, what they usually get are jumbled, disjointed and messy products.

Learning how to use the right combination of tools for the right project at the right time will not only yield surprising outputs but will also save you the time and effort from learning all the tools available.  The following are some of the more effective tools that complement each other.

-Artists’ Oils:  I consider this the most appealing feature in the improved Painter.  It is much like drawing and painting the natural way.  This mimics real tools and media used in art.

-Picking up Underlying Colors:  Also from Painter, this amazing feature is encased in a tiny checkbox in each layer.  What you need to do is just tick off the underlying colors from each layer.  This makes your work seem more real.  This complements the Artists’ Oils tool.

-Pattern Chalk:  This marvelous tool allows the designer to make use of imagery to define the brushstrokes.  You may say that this is similar to that of Photoshop’s defining a brush.  But, no- it is much more than that.  This tool is still from Painter.

Knowing what you want for your creation before starting on the project is essential; regardless     whether you make a preliminary sketch or not.  For instance, I have a picture in my mind that shows fake but lovely tresses.  We then proceed to shoot the model‘s locks independently.  The same holds true for the type of textile, for example.  Thus, in order to proceed with your work, you must have a concrete idea of what you want.
